Meet Tayla
(BNHM, Dip.Holistic Nutrition, GradDip.AppPsych)
I truly believe in a holistic healthcare philosophy that treats both the body and the mind.
To me, it's common knowledge that our body and mind are deeply interconnected. For instance, have you ever heard of the saying 'I have butterflies in your stomach'? That feeling arises from an intricate dance of hormones, chemicals, neurons, blood cells, and organs, all of which are influenced by our thoughts, actions, nutrition, and daily practices. So, in my view, if we address a physiological issue like irregular periods, acne or gut issues, we must also consider the mind - its habits, thoughts, nourishment, and overall well-being.
My focus is on optimizing physiology, not just avoiding disease.
Sure, it's vital to do our best to prevent conditions like CVD, Diabetes, and Atherosclerosis, but what about those of us who are just ‘moderately healthy’? Our blood tests may be ‘normal’, but we still don't feel entirely well. We might have messy cycles, struggle with fertility, experience chronic pain, stress, or frequent infections. I believe in living a truly healthy life, not settling for just being "healthy enough".
In my practice, I embrace integrative medicine, recognizing that no single healthcare provider can be an expert in all areas.
I appreciate the value of various health professionals, be they psychologists, physiotherapists, naturopaths, doctors, acupuncturists, etc. I will always refer my clients to the appropriate specialists when necessary.
I've witnessed a gap in traditional healthcare.
When dealing with my own challenges of PCOS, hormonal acne, and other debilitating symptoms, I felt frustrated by hearing the same generic advice from my health providers, such as "Just lose some weight", "If your mum had it, you will too" or “It just is”. It wasn't until I visited my Naturopath, Holistic GP, and Psychologist that I truly understood the importance of holistic care, especially for treating hormonal issues.
I'm deeply fascinated by the intricate dance of our hormones, which affects how we feel, act, and even look.
My journey through hormonal challenges could have been much smoother if I had known then what I know now. Over the years, I've focused my research on women's hormonal health concerns, including PCOS, Endometriosis, hormonal acne, PMDD, thyroid issues, and fertility and pregnancy. I'm dedicated to continuously expanding my knowledge in psychology, physiology, nutrition, and natural medicine.
My goal is to revolutionize women's healthcare.
No more dismissing symptoms, no more fad diets, no more “blaming your hormones”. I want to inspire more questions, understanding, and empowerment. I aim to help women live fulfilling, balanced lives, free of debilitating symptoms. It astounds me that hormonal issues have become so prevalent, but I'm determined to make a change. Let's put more care into our health care.
Naturopathy - the study of natural medicine
Naturopaths use evidence-based natural therapies like nutrition, diet, lifestyle and mindset adjustments, herbal medicine and nutritional supplements to help improve your holistic well-being.
As a holistic practitioner, I take your physical and psychological health into consideration for a broad perspective of your ‘personal health puzzle’. From there, I work with you, step by step, to naturally support your well-being, wherever the starting point is.
Whether you have a complex diagnosed condition that you struggle to live with, experience frustrating symptoms that you just want to manage better, or would simply like to live a healthier, happier and more balanced life to lower your risk of disease, then starting your health journey with a registered Naturopath is just the thing for you.
I'm all about evidence-based medicine in my work as a naturopath. Having the right qualifications to be a naturopath is essential, but unfortunately, the field faces some controversy because it's not a ‘protected title’ in New Zealand. This means that people without proper qualifications can call themselves naturopaths, which can be risky for the public and also impacts the reputation of qualified practitioners, like me.
Personally, I believe that naturopaths should be recognized as registered health professionals, just like nurses, chiropractors, physiotherapists, counsellors, and acupuncturists. But for now, I'm proud to be association-registered, meeting the same high standard or care and professionalism as other healthcare professionals.
